In the first ever newsletter, I thought it would be appropriate to pay homage to the 3 newsletters that inspired me to start mine. In no particular order:
Shaan Puriâs 5 Tweet Tuesday: Shaan sends his top 5 favorite tweets from the week, and a brief comment on why theyâre so good.
Danny Sheridanâs Fact of the Day: Danny sends out an interesting Fact (usually business related) every day.
Tim Ferrissâs 5 Bullet Friday: Tim sends out 5 things heâs been reading, watching, using, or discovering every week.
3. Lay-offs and Firing - Donât do this!
Taking the internet by storm, a video surfaced on TikTok showing the actual zoom call in which the Better.com CEO laid off roughly 900 people. Letâs just say⊠its hard to believe this guy is a CEO of a 7,000+ employee company doing just under $1billion in revenue.
If you havenât see the video yet, check it out đ Right Here
âŠand then check out this remake made by Corporate Bro đ đ đ
So what was so bad about this? Hereâs 3 things he could have done better:
Get to the point: It took almost 1.5 min until the CEO directly said that everyone on the call was part of the lay-offs. If youâre on the other side of this call, all youâre thinking is âam I getting laid off?â. Donât make people wait and start guessing, rip the band aid off right away.
Donât make if about yourself: In the video, before the CEO directly says that those on the call are being laid off he says âThis is the second time in my career that I am doing this and I do not, do not want to do this. The last time I did it I cried, this time I hope to be strongerâ *Insert sad violin music*. Dude, are you for-real? No body cares that this is tough for you. You just told 900+ people they no longer have a job right before the holidays. Make this about the people affected because no one cares about your feelings.
Take responsibility: In the case of lay-offs, they typically need to when there is something fundamentally wrong with the business, not because 900+ employees are underperforming. The CEO states the reasons for lay-offs being âthe market, efficiency, and performancesâ, not one mention of anything leadership did wrong. Take some responsibility here, and apologize that it had to come to this decision.
