🧠 A TikTok Software Review Business Idea Ft. Eliot Rathe
You Need to Try This Website and Did You Know Airbnb Sold Cereal to Save The Company?
This week I sat down with Eliot Rathe, aka @TheQCGhost.
Eliot is an email copywriter and the founder of backendboost.co, a B2B SaaS email agency.
Eliot and I discussed:
How a near death experience led to a semi-pro soccer contract, and inspired him to start his first business.
How he became a copywriter and used his experience from a failed business to start BackendBoost.
Why you should learn a new language.
Growing a Twitter following
And a business idea involving TikTok and software reviews.

1. Business idea of the Week: TikTok Software Reviews
Now let’s get into the idea of the week:
Tech product reviews are a massive category on Youtube.
Unbox Therapy is a great example with over 18 million subscribers, and millions of dollars generated from their videos each year.
So how can you do something similar?
The idea: Create a TikTok page focused on reviewing software tools.
There’s a ton of softwares out there, and people love to watch review videos.
There are already large TikTok accounts that review physical products from places like Amazon, and you can use the same exact model.
Take @ariellebrimhall for example.
Arielle posts a new product review every week for a product you can buy on Amazon.
After every video, she posts her affiliate link to the product in her bio, and gets paid anytime someone buys the product with her link.
So let’s do the same thing for software tools!
Get started by posting 30-60 second review videos of software tools. Once you start getting some views and followers, there are two ways you can monetize this.
You can act as an affiliate (just like Arielle), and receive a “referral fee” for everyone new user that signs up for the SaaS you review.
Simply find software tools with affiliate programs, sign up as an affiliate, and put your link in your TikTok bio.
Once you have some influence, you can likely get SaaS tools to pay you for a review.
The more videos you post = the more money you can make.
This is a side hustle that anyone can start with $0.
We riff on this idea and a few others starting at 👉 57:00 in the interview.
2. You Need to Try This Website.
This week @Levelsio released his new website…. and it’s sick.
The website is interiorai.com, and it allows you upload a picture of any room, and let AI generate a rendering of a new interior for the room.
For example, you can upload a picture of your living room, tell the tool to make your room modern style, and it will render a new photo of your room with modern designs.
Here’s a picture of my living room:
And here’s a my living room rendered as “Cyber Punk”:
Pretty cool, right?
3. Did You Know Airbnb Sold Cereal to Save The Company?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock the last 5 years, you’re probably familiar with the home rental site Airbnb.com.
These days Airbnb generates >$6 billion every year, and and has a market cap over $69 billion.
But it wasn’t always smooth sailing for the founders.
Back in 2008, the founders of Airbnb racked up over $30K worth of credit card debt, and needed more money to keep the company afloat.
The founders began reaching out to investors to raise money, but no one was interested at the time (talk about a missed opportunity).
So they had to get creative…
All eyes were on the 2008 presidential election between Obama and McCain at the time, and the founders saw this attention as an opportunity.
They came up with the idea to sell limited edition Obama and McCain themed cereal, and quickly got to work.
They came up with the name “Obama O’s” and “Cap’n McCain’s”, and used one of their connections to get 100’s of these cereal boxes printed.
They went to the grocery store, bought the cheapest cereal they could find, and began filling up the boxes in their apartment.
So what happens next?
The orders start flowing in!
The boxes sold at $40 a piece, and the founders were able to sell 800 boxes, generating >$30,000 in sales, and saving the company until the next investment round.
Talk about a couple of “cereal entrepreneurs”…🙃.
